Civil Ceremonies

For a legally binding civil ceremony in Barcelona, at least one partner must be a Spanish resident or have lived in Spain for two years. Civil weddings are performed at the local Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) or civil registry, and the ceremony must take place at these official locations – officials don’t travel to your venue. This is why most of my international couples choose a symbolic ceremony – it’s simpler, more flexible, and just as meaningful. Catholic weddings are legally recognized in Spain, even if both partners are foreigners. At least one partner must be Catholic, and the documentation process is extensive. Papers need to be signed within six months of the wedding date.

Best Seasons for Barcelona Weddings

Spring (May-June): Beautiful light, comfortable temperatures, ideal for outdoor celebrations. This is my top recommendation for wedding photography. I’ve photographed over 50 weddings in May and June, and the golden hour light during this time is simply unmatched – soft, warm, and long-lasting.

Early Autumn (September-October): Similar to spring, with warm but not overwhelming temperatures and golden light. Another excellent choice.

Peak Summer (July-August)

• Hot and humid conditions
• Works best with well-ventilated spaces, shade, and later start times
• Booking venues and accommodations well in advance is essential
• Generally, locals don’t usually get married in August. Climate change is real!

Winter (December-February)

• Cooler with average daytime temperatures around 15°C (can drop to 0°C at night outside the city)
• Fewer crowds and more venue availability (probably cheaper too)
• Still possible for indoor ceremonies

Pro tip: Rain is most common in May, September, and October, but often doesn’t last long. Barcelona has few rainy days overall, making it a relatively safe year-round choice. Sitges is known for having the most days without rain.

Hotel Venues:

Magnificent medieval castles:

• Castell de Tamarit – Not really in the Barcelona province but in Tarragona. The reason I include this venue in the list, is because it is really not that far from the city of Barcelona. All services are included with the venue, wedding planning, catering, florist… I have worked here on numerous occasions.
  
• Castell de Santa Fiorentina – Another medieval castle near Barcelona. If you’re into Game of Thrones, you might like this one as it was one of the locations for the show.

Modernist Landmarks:

• Casa Batlló – One of Gaudí’s masterpieces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with stunning interiors. I’ve photographed weddings here, and the light filtering through the stained glass creates absolutely magical portraits.
• Casa Milà (La Pedrera) – Iconic rooftop shots with distinct architectural lines
• Hospital de Sant Pau – A hidden gem of modernist architecture for dramatic portraits
• Palau de la Música Catalana – Stunning interiors for elegant photographs

Now, these are very hard to book and expensive. Keep that in mind.
